“The Jordaan” is a district in the city center of Amsterdam, known for its beautiful houses, nice restaurants and original shops. It is the area at the west side of the ‘grachtengordel’ (main canals) in the heart of Amsterdam. The district’s borders are formed by the Lijnbaansgracht, Brouwersgracht, Prinsengracht and the Passeerdersgracht. It is located on walking distance of the Central Station, the Dam or the Leidseplein.
The Jordaan was built at the large expansion of the city in 1612, as a district for the working class and emigrants. It was very poor and run down until the seventies when a large modernisation was started. By then the district was discovered by a new generation occupants: artists, students and young entrepreneurs. By these new inhabitants, the Jordaan has changed from a slum area to a district for the rich, with lots of boutiques, terraces, restaurants and pubs, offering its visitors all kinds of styles and activities.
It is definitely the most sung about district of Holland since most of the Dutch singers are from this district. Against the backdrop of poverty, dirt and hard work, a vibrant music style emerged in the Jordaan. You will feel it immediately in the old pubs of the area where that music is still played and on the Johnny Jordaan Plein you will find statues of the famous Jordaan singers.
The Jordaan is home to many important sights of Amsterdam such as Anne Frank’s house, Westerntower and church, Nordermarkt, as well as some famous markets of the city. In Villa360, you will just be a stone throw away from all those sights and can easily walk to the places you want to experience in Amsterdam.
